What it is

Kids Voting Edina is a sub-segment of Kids Voting Minnesota and Kids Voting USA. It is a grassroots, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to educating Edina’s youth on the voting process -- and giving them the ability to go to the polls to exercise their right to vote!

Kids Voting Edina is made possible by a joint effort between Edina Public Schools and the City of Edina, as well as many sponsors in the business community. The program is intended to promote the importance of voting and civic awareness by guiding students through the real-life voting process. Kids Voting Edina hopes to generate an excitement for voting and civic engagement that extends well into adulthood. According to research, communities that have participated in Kids Voting projects have increased overall voter turnout by 3 to 5 percent with the voter turnout among 18- to 24-year-olds increasing up to 14 percent

How it works

Kids Voting Edina Logo

In the weeks leading up to the election, Edina K-8 teachers will focus on preparing students for the polls. Classrooms will be abuzz with “learn-by-doing” and hands-on activities as well as critical thinking lessons that will teach students the democratic process.

Students in grades K-12 are then invited to the adult polling sites with their parents or guardians on Election Day where they will vote for the same candidates and issues as adults. Though not part of the official results, student votes will be tallied and reported at schools and by the media.
