2008 "Images of Edina" Photo Contest Results
Frannie Kuhs' photo,
"Ice Cream Store Delight,” won Best of Show in addition to the "Doing
Business” category in the 5th Annual Images of Edina Photo Contest. A
record 60 photos depicting the people, places and scenes of Edina were
submitted this year.
Judges meticulously narrowed the field down to four
winning photographs representing the City’s vision statement, which
proclaims Edina as a preeminent place for living, learning, raising families
and doing business. In addition to the four category winners, “Judges
Choice” and “Staff Choice” awards were also given. Winners were presented
plaques at the Aug. 4, 2008 City Council meeting.

BEST OF SHOW
“Ice Cream Store Delight,” by Frannie Kuhs, which depicts Kuhs’s son
eating an ice cream cone outside of their neighborhood ice cream
shop, won the “Doing Business” category. |

“Claude Sigmund and Students” by
Jolene Goldade, which depicts Edina Teacher-of-the Year Claude
Sigmund in intense discussion with a pair of students, won the
“Learning” Category. |

“Flight of the Egret” by Denis
Plaster, which depicts an Egret taking flight from one of Edina’s
lakes, won the “Living” category. |

“Family Fun” by Arlene Green, which depicts a family overlooking a
concert at the Maetzold Amphitheater at Centennial Lakes Park, won
the “Raising Families” category. |

“Spiral at the Park,” by Jenna Klein, which uses a combination of
color, black and white and unique perspective to depict a spiral
jungle gym at one of Edina’s parks, was awarded the “Judges Choice”
award. |

“Speed Racer,” by Marni Kirchmaier, which depicts Kirchmaier’s
daughter in oversized sunglasses riding a plastic car, was awarded
the “Staff Choice” award. |

Each photo was scored by five judges on the criteria of subject matter,
composition, clarity, depth of field, lighting, quality of color or black
and white, artistry and drama, degree of difficulty, Edina relevance and
overall impact. This year’s judges included three professional
photographers; Andrew Vick of Vick Photography, Polly Norman of Polly Norman
Art and Kimberly Barrett of Kimberly Barrett Studios; as well as Pat Brink
of Brink PR and Elisabeth Donnan, City of Edina Communications & Marketing
Intern.
The photos are framed and hanging in the Finance Department at City Hall,
along with the winners of the 2009 contest.
